RASS for MST Radar

By adding an acoustic attachment to the MST Radar remote profiling of atmospheric temperature in the troposphere and lower stratosphere is possible on a continuous basis. The fundamental principle of Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) is based on the fact that acoustic speed is proportional to the square of atmospheric temperature. When an acoustic pulse is transmitted, it generates refractive index fluctuations that propagate at acoustic speed and effectively scatter radio waves when the Bragg condition is satisfied between the acoustic and radar wavelengths. Development and testing of the RASS for MST radar is in progress.
